| Artist Profile of Kirsten Pleitner |
|
Kirsten was born in Germany and trained in Hamburgh before immigrating to New Zealand recently. She has set up a studio at the Quarry in Whangarei and is persuing her interest in screen printed textiles, woven seatbelts and ceramics.
Artist statement:
There are so many things that I do not want (Socrates)
Simplicity is the leitmotiv of the designing process, and at the same time I pay great attention to detail, choice of technique and material.
Via experimental approaches I find applications for un-/ usual materials. For me it's a play with optical effects, technique and connotations.
I am very inspired by the phenomenon of the Oxymoron (two words of opposite meanings form a new message together) which I transfer to the visual field. Textiles (as base material) offer the greatest metaphorical medium for me to interweave cultures and I guess this is what I am here for.
As sustainability is a big issue for me I don't follow the commandments of fashion. It's rather about quality, innovation and thinking ahead, questioning the current zeitgeist (e.g. our hunt for cheap products that fulfil our needs only for a short while).
I search for abundance in emptiness
Excitement in the (at first glance) usual
A simplicity which is not trivial.
And in the end
A little twinkle in the eye

We look forward to seeing more of her innovative work in the gallery soon.
