Artist Statement:
'I work predominantly with metal and long thin strips of paper to create delicate forms of pattern and repetition. The concertinaed shapes are determined by exact calculations that direct the folds and weaves of the material and the beauty that results is a study in balance, rhythm and harmony of form. I am continually inspired by new ways to push this process which has slowly evolved from small two dimensional designs to larger forms. I love the challenge of combining metal and paper as the materials are so contrasting and require different ways of working.
In 2005 I created a series of neckpieces that focused on proportioning systems and ways to harmoniously integrate metal and paper. The paper necklace titled '...1,2,3,5... 'applies the Fibonacci sequence (1,1,2,3,5,8...) in the number of paper strips and the lengths of the metal links. The idea of using paper, usually perceived as a worthless material, with gold was also appealing.
The brooches titled 'Edinburgh series' are the result of a residency with the Jewellery and Silversmithing Department at the Edinburgh College of Art in Scotland last year. During this time I was fortunate to witness Edinburgh's transition from winter to spring and spotted throughout the streets of grey cobblestone, trees blossomed pink and white. After a night of rain I awoke to find carpets of petals under bare trees and for days streams of pink and white flowed up and down the streets, piling up in gutters and settling in between the cobblestones. I was already interested in exploring ways to wrap and knot long strands of woven paper around metal frames but seeing the petals trapped in between the cobblestones inspired me to work with colour in between grey.'
