Artist Profile of Rachel Bell
Artist Statement

'The incorporation of wool and embroidery into my practice stemmed in part from an upbringing in which handcrafts were vital, and also from ongoing research into gender studies, the social construction of gendered activities, and the status of the domestic crafts and jewellery within the traditional art hierarchy.

These interests were realised in work that combined materials and processes associated with the domestic crafts with those of traditional jewellery. Conceptually I was attempting to strip the materials of their usual functionality, elevating their everyday status by framing them instead as adornment. As media with a beauty of their own, a process with an end in itself.

My pieces often challenge accepted notions of wearability and preciousness through use of scale and non-traditional materials.'
