Artist Profile of Vaune Mason
Artist Statement:

'I aim to create works that are rich with a verdant mix of detail, narrative and material surface.

I hope that my creations give a viewer a hint, a taste, a clue for a door of memory... that may open, and lead to a journey and to stories of their own discovery.

I enjoy exploring the meanings of precious - I enjoy finding materials that have a sensitive preciousness; they are so much more challenging to work with than purely material worth.

The leathers I use often come from still born animals, and inherent in that small tragedy is the infinite preciousness of their life, of the perfect -ness of their form, of their life - that never began.

I often use flawed stones, broken lenses and I try to recycle, to find new uses for cast off objects and materials. Precious, after all, is in the eye of the beholder.

Mostly I enjoy immersing myself in the making process. More and more I gain greatest joy from making work that engages me in it own creation, that evolves into an object that is somehow full of life and personality.

My work is inspired by stories, reflections of humanity, and echoes of childhood. Artists that have influenced me include illustrator - Shaun Tan, Jewellers - Tania Patterson, Keith lo Bue, Director Tim Burton, and artists Brian Froud and Michael Parkes.'
