| Artist Profile of Anna Whitley |
|
Anna Whitley graduated from Unitec design school in Auckland in 2002 with a Bachelor of 3D Design (Hons).
Her current series explores the diamond as a commodity in a group of brooches.
While undeniably beautiful, the high value given to diamonds is largely arbitrary, the result of marketing and the subsequent narratives we come to believe as fact. In consequence, the continued public desire for diamonds becomes more about prestige, wealth, consumption and marketing, and less about the appeal of a diamonds actual appearance.
Whitleys brooches, created from sterling silver and glass, are inscribed with book titles; Dead Girls Dont Wear Diamonds, Richer than Diamonds, The Devils Diamonds, Diamonds and Diplomats, reminding us of the realities of the diamond trade where anything may be sacrificed for material gain.
