Artist Statement:
'I began making crochet objects, flowers and doilies. Researching the works of Ani O'Neil and Emily Siddell, I have since found inspiration from this traditional handicraft.'

Karen Michaud began making jewellery four years ago after leaving the hospitality industry, in which she had worked for eleven years. Michaud studied north of Auckland at Hungry Creek Art and Craft School, completing a diploma in Jewellery in 2004.
Michaud has been involved in several exhibitions, the last of which was held at the Papakura Art Gallery and entitled 'Flash Harry'. Her ideas derive from fashion, contemporary fine art, and traditional handicraft, and she very much enjoys the fact that jewellery need not be made of metal.
Recently Michaud has also begun to make use of felt. After being disappointed with shop-bought, machine made felt she was led towards making her own, which has since been incorporated into her brooches and earrings.
Michaud's practice is a mix of both traditional and contemporary techniques, combining handmade materials and traditional jewellery techniques.
