Phillipa Gee attended an introductory course in jewellery making while enrolled at Wellington Teachers' Training College. She soon discovered her heart lay with jewellery and went on to complete a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Art, majoring in contemporary jewellery, at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology.
After moving back to New Zealand Gee combined tutoring at Wairarapa Community Polytechnic with making and exhibiting her own work. In 2001 she spent a year living in the United Kingdom and travelling throughout Europe, visiting all the major art galleries and museums.
Now based in Masterton, Gee works almost entirely in silver, including fine silver wire, and finds her inspiration in nature and in man-made patterns.
It is through boiling the silver in alum that Gee is able to create the soft white surfaces her work is so well known for, as this removes the tiny traces of copper the silver conceals.
Gee writes:
'I'm always looking at things from the point of view of making jewellery. e.g. river stones, a tangled pile of audio tape, a wrought iron gate and tapa cloth have all given me ideas for jewellery.'
